The STARRETT 54560 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Ground to close tolerances, this flat stock measures 5/32 inch thick, 2 inches wide, and 36 inches long, with a thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inch and a width tolerance of plus 0.000 to 0.005 inch. The length tolerance is plus 0.25 inch. Squareness is held to 0.003 inch per inch on all edges. A2 tool steel offers excellent dimensional stability during air hardening, making it a preferred choice for punches, dies, gauges, and cutting tools where distortion control after heat treatment is critical. The bar weighs 3.66 pounds.
This flat stock is suited for tool and die shops, machine shops, and maintenance departments that fabricate or repair tooling in-house. Typical applications include blanking dies, forming dies, trim dies, gauges, and wear plates. The 36-inch length provides useful yield for multiple short blanks or a single long component. A2 tool steel is commonly selected over O1 when reduced warpage during hardening is a priority. Licensed machinists, tool and die makers, and precision fabricators are the primary installers and end users of this material.

Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or tool and die makers using appropriate metalworking equipment. Secure the workpiece firmly before cutting, grinding, or milling operations. Heat treatment, including hardening and tempering, should follow established metallurgical procedures for AISI A2 tool steel and should be performed by qualified heat-treat personnel or a certified heat-treating facility. Allow the material to reach ambient temperature before final inspection of tolerances.
