The STARRETT 54548 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Measuring 0.125 inches thick, 1.5 inches wide, and 36 inches long, this flat stock ships in a ready-to-machine condition for fabrication of punches, dies, blades, and custom tooling components. A2 tool steel offers good wear resistance and dimensional stability during air hardening, making it a preferred choice where distortion control is critical. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, and squareness is maintained at 0.003 inches per inch of edge.
This flat stock is suited for machine shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance departments requiring precision-ground or precision-rolled tool steel blanks. The 36-inch length provides sufficient stock for multiple tooling pieces cut from a single bar. Typical users include tool and die makers, machinists, and industrial maintenance technicians working on fixture components, forming dies, cutting tools, and wear plates.
Designed as a standard A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock blank for use in general tool and die fabrication, punch and die sets, and precision machining applications where air-hardening grades are specified.
Cutting, grinding, and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed with appropriate metal-cutting equipment and personal protective equipment per shop safety standards. Heat treatment of A2 tool steel should follow the material manufacturer's recommended hardening and tempering cycles and is typically performed by a qualified heat treater. All machining and finishing should be completed before final hardening unless post-heat allowances are factored into part dimensions.
