The STARRETT 54542 is a precision-ground O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 2 inches thick, 6 inches wide, and 36 inches long. O1 is an oil-hardening cold-work tool steel prized for its dimensional stability during heat treat, good machinability in the annealed state, and strong wear resistance after hardening. This flat stock is manufactured to tight tolerances — thickness held to plus or minus 0.001 inches — making it suitable for toolmakers, die makers, and machinists who need reliable stock for dies, punches, gauges, and fixtures. At 121.4 pounds, this is a heavy-section bar intended for industrial toolroom and production applications.
O1 flat stock in this size range is commonly used in toolrooms, job shops, and manufacturing facilities where large dies, mold components, or custom tooling require a through-hardenable steel with predictable heat-treat response. The 2-inch thickness and 6-inch width provide sufficient material for roughing out large die blocks, wear plates, and forming tools. Machinists typically machine the part to near-net shape in the annealed condition before sending out for oil-quench hardening and tempering. Machining and handling of large tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified toolmakers or machinists using appropriate lifting equipment given the 121.4-pound bar weight. Machine in the annealed condition before heat treatment. Heat treating O1 steel requires oil quenching and tempering by a qualified heat treat facility following applicable metallurgical procedures — do not attempt to alter heat treat parameters without proper equipment and process controls. Inspect dimensions after heat treat as minor distortion may occur on large cross-sections.
