The STARRETT 54517 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 1-1/8 inches thick, 4 inches wide, and 36 inches long, and weighs 45.9 pounds. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications that demand tight dimensional accuracy before and after heat treatment. O1 tool steel offers good machinability in the annealed state and responds well to oil-quench hardening, giving machinists and toolmakers a reliable starting material for punches, dies, gauges, and similar tooling components.
This flat stock is used in job shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance departments where custom tooling or wear components need to be fabricated from raw stock. It is appropriate for applications requiring a tough, wear-resistant steel that can be hardened and ground to final dimensions. The 36-inch length and 4-inch width provide enough material for a range of tooling layouts without requiring further saw resizing in most standard applications. Licensed machinists and tool and die makers are the primary users of this material.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 tool steel flat stock suitable for toolmaking, die making, and precision machining fabrication applications where oil-hardening steel stock is specified.
Cutting, grinding, and heat treatment of tool steel should be performed by qualified machinists or tool and die makers using appropriate metalworking equipment. Always follow established shop safety procedures when sawing, milling, or grinding this material. Heat treatment should be performed per the material specification for AISI O1 tool steel, including proper preheat, austenitizing, and oil-quench procedures. Consult the material data sheet for full hardening and tempering parameters before processing.
