The STARRETT 54515 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, jig building, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 material specification, this flat stock measures 1-1/8 inches thick, 2 inches wide, and 36 inches long and weighs 22.95 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, and squareness along all edges is controlled to 0.003 inches per inch. These tight tolerances make this bar suitable for applications where dimensional accuracy and consistent stock removal are critical before heat treatment. Machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance shops stock O1 flat bar for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, and wear components.
O1 tool steel flat stock is commonly used in job shops, toolrooms, and industrial maintenance environments. It machines well in the annealed state and responds predictably to oil-hardening heat treatment, making it a standard choice for short-run tooling, fixtures, and precision wear parts. This 36-inch length provides enough stock for multiple tool blanks from a single piece. The bar is supplied in an annealed condition and requires hardening and tempering by the end user to achieve working hardness.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for toolroom, die making, and precision machining applications where AISI Type O1 material specification is required.
Cutting, drilling, and milling should be performed while the bar is in the annealed condition using tooling rated for tool steel. Heat treatment — including hardening and tempering — should be performed by qualified personnel following established metallurgical procedures for AISI O1 tool steel. Eye protection and appropriate handling equipment are recommended when working with stock of this size and weight. Allow the bar to reach ambient temperature before precision layout or measurement.
