The STARRETT 54510 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. It is manufactured to AISI Type O1 material specification and measures 1 inch thick, 6 inches wide, and 36 inches long. The piece weighs 61.2 pounds. Tight tolerances are held throughout: thickness tolerance is plus or minus 0.001 inches, length tolerance is plus 0.015 inches, and width tolerance is 0 to minus 0.005 inches. Edge squareness is held to 0.003 inches per inch across all edges. Licensed machinists, tool and die makers, and industrial maintenance technicians are the primary users.
O1 tool steel flat stock is suited to fabrication of punches, dies, gauges, jigs, fixtures, and custom tooling components in machine shops and manufacturing facilities. This size — 1 inch thick by 6 inches wide by 36 inches long — provides substantial material for cutting multiple blanks or machining a single large tool component. The oil-hardening grade allows the stock to be heat treated to achieve high hardness while maintaining dimensional stability during the quench cycle. It is appropriate for both roughing operations and finish grinding prior to hardening.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock for use in standard tool and die, jig, fixture, and precision machining applications where AISI Type O1 material specification is required.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists using appropriate metal-cutting equipment such as band saws, milling machines, or surface grinders. Secure the workpiece firmly before any cutting operation to prevent movement. When heat treating, follow the O1 oil-quench procedure specified by your heat treatment facility — do not substitute water quenching. Personal protective equipment including safety glasses and gloves is required during all cutting and handling operations.
