The STARRETT 54507 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 1 inch thick, 4 inches wide, and 36 inches long. It is manufactured to AISI Type O1 material specification, a widely used oil-hardening tool steel known for its dimensional stability after heat treatment and good machinability in the annealed state. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making this bar suitable for toolroom applications where close tolerances are required before hardening. At 40.8 pounds per bar, this is a full-length production piece intended for machining, grinding, or fabrication into dies, gauges, punches, and similar tooling components.
This flat stock is used in toolroom, die shop, and precision machining environments. It is appropriate for applications requiring an oil-hardening steel that can be rough-machined in the soft annealed condition, then hardened and tempered to final working hardness. Typical end uses include blanking dies, forming dies, cutting tools, gauges, and fixtures where dimensional accuracy and hardenability are priorities. Installation or use in environments requiring high-speed or high-temperature cutting conditions would call for a different steel grade.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar for general toolroom and die shop applications requiring AISI Type O1 material specification.
Cutting, sawing, or machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed with appropriate metalworking equipment by qualified machinists or toolmakers. Material is supplied in the annealed condition and must be hardened and tempered by a qualified heat treater before use in tooling applications. Handle with care given the bar weight of 40.8 pounds. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting or machining.
