The STARRETT 54506 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured from AISI Type O1 tool steel, this flat stock measures 1 inch thick, 3-1/2 inches wide, and 36 inches long, weighing approximately 35.7 pounds. O1 tool steel is valued for its excellent dimensional stability during hardening, good machinability in the annealed state, and ability to hold a sharp cutting edge after heat treatment. Machinists, toolmakers, and die makers work with this material to produce punches, dies, gauges, and custom tooling components.
This flat stock is suited for job shops, tool and die shops, and maintenance machining departments in both industrial and commercial environments. The annealed condition allows for cutting, drilling, milling, and grinding prior to oil-quench hardening and tempering. The 36-inch length provides practical stock for cutting multiple blanks from a single piece, reducing setup time on the bandsaw or cold saw.
Designed as a standard O1 tool steel flat stock for use in toolmaking, die making, and general precision machining applications where oil-hardening tool steel is specified.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or toolmakers using appropriate cutting fluid and tooling rated for steel. Wear appropriate PPE including eye protection and cut-resistant gloves when handling or cutting stock. Oil hardening and tempering operations should follow established heat-treatment procedures and be performed with proper furnace equipment. Consult applicable shop safety codes and material data sheets before heat-treating.
