The STARRETT 54495 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar sized at 7/8 inch thick, 2 inches wide, and 36 inches long. O1 is a general-purpose oil-hardening tool steel known for good machinability in the annealed condition and consistent dimensional stability after heat treatment. This flat stock is manufactured to tight tolerances, making it well suited for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who need reliable pre-sized material for dies, punches, gauges, and similar precision tooling components. At 17.85 pounds per piece, it provides substantial stock for layout-to-finish work without excess handling waste.
This flat stock is used in machine shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance repair applications where precision steel bar stock is required. Its pre-ground flat form reduces setup time when fabricating custom tooling components such as blanking dies, forming tools, cutting blades, and fixture components. The 36-inch length accommodates a range of single-piece or multiple-piece layouts from one bar. It is appropriate for both job-shop and production toolroom environments.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolroom, die-making, and precision machining applications requiring pre-ground flat stock.
Cutting, grinding, and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or toolmakers using appropriate cutting fluids and feeds for tool steel. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting or grinding. Heat treatment of O1 steel requires controlled oil quench procedures and should follow established metallurgical practice for the specific hardness requirement. Handle edges with care as ground flat stock edges can be sharp.
