The STARRETT 54494 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who need a precision-ground starting blank for punches, dies, jigs, fixtures, and general toolroom applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 7/8 inch thick by 1-1/2 inch wide by 36 inch long and weighs approximately 13.39 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inch, supporting close-tolerance work right off the shelf. O1 tool steel is known for its excellent machinability in the annealed condition and its ability to achieve high hardness after oil quenching.
This flat stock is suited for low-to-medium production tooling in job shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance machining environments. The 36-inch length allows multiple blanks to be cut from a single piece, reducing material waste. Typical applications include forming punches, cutting dies, guide rails, wear plates, and custom gauging components. Machinists and tool and die makers are the primary installers and fabricators of this material. It is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining prior to heat treatment.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 tool steel flat stock blank for toolroom, die shop, and precision machining applications requiring AISI Type O1 oil-hardening material in 7/8 inch by 1-1/2 inch by 36 inch bar form.
O1 tool steel flat stock is fabricated by machinists and tool and die makers using standard milling, grinding, drilling, and sawing equipment. The material is supplied annealed and should be machined to final form before heat treatment. Follow established metallurgical procedures for oil quenching and tempering; consult AISI O1 heat-treat guidelines for target hardness ranges. Handle with care after hardening, as quenched tool steel is brittle until properly tempered.
