The STARRETT 54492 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar sized at 7/8 inches thick, 1 inch wide, and 36 inches long. O1 tool steel is a cold-work, oil-quench grade known for its ease of hardening, good wear resistance, and dimensional stability through heat treat. This flat stock ships in the annealed condition and is intended for fabrication into punches, dies, gauges, cutting tools, jigs, and fixtures. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and skilled tradespeople working in manufacturing or maintenance shops are the primary users. At 8.92 pounds per bar, this is a substantial piece suited for serious tooling applications.
This flat stock is used wherever a reliably machinable, oil-hardening tool steel is specified. Typical applications include the fabrication of blanking dies, form punches, drill jigs, and precision fixtures in job shops, maintenance departments, and production tool rooms. The annealed condition allows conventional machining before the part is hardened and tempered to final service hardness. The 36-inch length provides flexibility for multiple parts from a single bar.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening flat stock for use in general tooling, die-making, and precision fixture fabrication wherever O1 tool steel in 7/8 inch by 1 inch cross-section is specified.
Cutting and machining should be performed by qualified machinists using appropriate speeds and feeds for annealed tool steel. Hardening and tempering of O1 tool steel requires controlled atmosphere or salt-bath furnace equipment and should be performed by personnel familiar with heat-treat procedures for cold-work tool steels. Always follow shop safety protocols when cutting, grinding, or heat-treating steel bar stock. Handle with care — edges are sharp as-supplied.
