The STARRETT 54489 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, jig and fixture fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 0.75 inches thick, 10 inches wide, and 36 inches long, and weighs 76.5 pounds. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, with edge squareness controlled to 0.003 inches per inch. O1 tool steel offers good machinability in the annealed state and responds well to oil-quench hardening, making it a standard choice for precision tooling blanks that require post-machining heat treatment.

Heat treatment — including hardening and tempering — should follow established metallurgical procedures for AISI O1 tool steel and be performed by qualified personnel. At 76.5 pounds, safe material handling practices and appropriate lifting equipment are recommended.
