The STARRETT 54486 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 0.75 inches thick, 5 inches wide, and 36 inches long. Thickness tolerance is held to +/- 0.001 inches, and squareness is controlled to 0.003 inches per inch on all edges. This level of dimensional precision makes it a preferred choice for machinists and tool and die makers who need stock that machines predictably and responds consistently to oil-hardening heat treatment.
O1 tool steel flat stock in this size range is used in the fabrication of punches, dies, blades, gauges, and wear components in both job shop and production environments. It is commonly stocked by tool rooms and machine shops that require a general-purpose tool steel with good machinability before hardening. The 36-inch bar length provides sufficient material for a range of part sizes without requiring further breakdown from a larger stock length.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock for use in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications where AISI Type O1 material specification is required.
Cutting, grinding, and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or tool and die makers using appropriate metalworking equipment. O1 tool steel must be oil-quenched during heat treatment — follow the material specification and applicable shop procedures for hardening and tempering cycles. Wear appropriate PPE when cutting or grinding. Verify final dimensions after machining and before hardening, as post-hardening material removal is significantly more difficult.
