The STARRETT 54485 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who need a reliable raw material for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, and cutting tools. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 0.75 inches thick, 4.5 inches wide, and 36 inches long. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for precision tooling applications where dimensional accuracy before hardening is critical. The bar weighs approximately 34.43 pounds, consistent with a solid tool steel section of these dimensions.
O1 tool steel flat stock is used in job shops, tool-and-die operations, and maintenance departments for producing or refurbishing tooling components. The oil-hardening grade is well-suited for applications requiring moderate wear resistance and good machinability in the annealed state prior to heat treatment. This bar is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining, grinding, and subsequent oil-quench hardening by a qualified heat treater or in-house furnace operation.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications where an oil-quenched, air-cooled hardening process will be applied downstream.
Machining and grinding of O1 tool steel flat stock should be performed in the annealed state using appropriate metalworking equipment. Secure the workpiece firmly before cutting to prevent movement and maintain dimensional accuracy. Heat treatment — including hardening and tempering — must be performed by a qualified heat treater following AISI O1 recommended thermal cycles; do not attempt hardening without proper furnace controls and quench media. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment when machining or handling tool steel bar stock.
