The STARRETT 54480 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in precision toolmaking, die work, and general machining applications. It is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining before heat treatment. The bar measures 0.75 inches thick, 2 inches wide, and 36 inches long, and carries a thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches. At 15.3 pounds, this is a substantial piece suited for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, jigs, and cutting tools. AISI Type O1 is a widely used oil-hardening grade known for its dimensional stability during heat treat and its ease of machining in the soft state. Machinists, tool and die makers, and metalworking shops are the primary users.
This flat stock is appropriate for job shop and production toolroom environments where precise blanks are needed for tool fabrication. The 36-inch length allows multiple blanks to be cut from a single bar. The 2-inch width and 0.75-inch thickness cover a broad range of punch, die plate, and fixture component applications. Edge squareness is held to 0.003 inches per inch across all edges, making this stock suitable for layout-critical work without requiring additional surface grinding on the edges prior to use.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar for toolroom, die shop, and precision machining applications requiring AISI Type O1 material specification.
Cutting, drilling, and milling should be performed in the annealed state before heat treatment. O1 tool steel requires oil quenching during hardening — follow established heat treat procedures appropriate to the cross-section size. Wear appropriate PPE when cutting or grinding. Consult applicable shop safety standards and material data sheets before thermal processing.
