The STARRETT 54479 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 0.75 inches thick, 1.5 inches wide, and 36 inches long, and weighs 11.47 pounds. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications where dimensional consistency is critical before hardening. The O1 grade offers good machinability in the annealed state and is designed to be oil-quenched for final hardening.
This flat stock is used in tool and die shops, machine shops, and industrial fabrication environments. Typical applications include punches, dies, gauges, cutting tools, and fixture components that require a hard, wear-resistant surface after heat treatment. The 36-inch length provides enough stock for multiple blanks to be cut from a single piece, reducing setup time on the bandsaw or cutoff wheel.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolmaking and die-making applications requiring AISI Type O1 material specification.
Cutting, grinding, and machining should be performed in the annealed condition prior to heat treatment. Oil hardening and tempering should be carried out by qualified personnel following established metallurgical procedures and applicable shop safety standards. Use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting or grinding tool steel. Verify final dimensions after any heat-treat operation, as minor distortion may occur.
