The STARRETT 54470 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who require a machinable blank that can be hardened after final shaping. AISI Type O1 tool steel offers good machinability in the annealed state and achieves high surface hardness when oil quenched. This bar measures 5/8 inch thick, 4 inches wide, and 36 inches long and weighs 25.5 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for precision tooling applications where dimensional accuracy in the raw stock reduces downstream grinding time.
This flat stock is used in job shops, tool-and-die operations, and maintenance machining departments. Typical applications include punch blanks, die plates, gauges, jigs, fixtures, and custom cutting tools. The 36-inch length allows multiple pieces to be cut from a single bar. It is appropriate for both light-production tooling and one-off custom work where oil-hardening steel is the specified material.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for use in tool-and-die, jig, fixture, and general precision machining applications requiring AISI Type O1 material specification.
Cutting, grinding, and machining should be performed while the bar is in the annealed condition prior to heat treatment. Oil hardening and tempering operations should be carried out by a qualified heat treater following established metallurgical procedures for AISI Type O1 steel. Appropriate personal protective equipment and ventilation are required during cutting and grinding. Follow applicable shop safety standards when handling bar stock of this weight and length.
