The STARRETT 54469 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar sized at 5/8 inch thick, 3-1/2 inches wide, and 36 inches long. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock is designed for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who need a reliable, machinable blank that responds well to oil-quench heat treatment. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for precision tool and die work where dimensional accuracy before hardening is critical. At 22.32 pounds, it is a substantial bar suited to heavy tooling applications.
O1 tool steel flat stock is used in the fabrication of cutting tools, punches, dies, gauges, and fixtures across job shops, tool rooms, and manufacturing facilities. This bar is typically cut, machined, and ground to final geometry before being oil-hardened and tempered by the end user. The 36-inch length provides sufficient stock for multiple tool blanks from a single piece, reducing scrap and setup time.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 tool steel flat stock blank suitable for use in tool and die, punch and die, gauge, and fixture fabrication applications requiring oil-hardening tool steel.
Machining and cutting of tool steel flat stock should be performed with appropriate carbide or high-speed steel tooling rated for tool steel alloys. Follow all shop safety practices when sawing or grinding. Heat treatment, including oil quenching and tempering, should be performed by qualified personnel following established metallurgical procedures for AISI O1 tool steel. Allow the bar to reach ambient temperature before performing finish grinding after heat treatment to avoid dimensional errors.
