The STARRETT 54467 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, fixture building, die work, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 5/8 inch thick, 2-1/2 inches wide, and 36 inches long. It holds a thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches and a length tolerance of plus 0.015 inches, making it suitable for applications that demand close dimensional control before hardening. Machinists and toolmakers rely on O1 material for its consistent response to oil quench heat treatment and its ability to hold a sharp edge after hardening.
This flat stock is used in job shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance machining environments. It is well suited for making punches, dies, gauges, bushings, and general tooling blanks that will be machined to final dimensions before heat treating. The 36-inch length provides enough stock for most single-piece tooling jobs without requiring a cut-to-length order. Edge squareness is held to 0.003 inches per inch on all edges, reducing setup time when referencing off the stock surface.
Designed as a standard O1 tool steel flat bar for general toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications requiring oil-hardening steel stock.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by a machinist or toolmaker using appropriate cutting fluids and tooling rated for hardened or semi-hard ferrous stock. Heat treatment, including oil quench hardening and tempering, should follow AISI O1 processing guidelines and be performed by a qualified heat treater. Always wear appropriate PPE when cutting, grinding, or handling raw steel stock. Deburr all edges after machining and before hardening to prevent stress concentration.
