The STARRETT 54464 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 5/8 inches thick, 1-1/4 inches wide, and 36 inches long, weighing 7.97 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, and length tolerance is plus 0.015 inches. O1 tool steel offers good machinability in the annealed state and responds well to oil-quench hardening, making it a reliable choice for custom tooling, gauges, fixtures, and wear components.
This flat stock is suited for machine shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance departments requiring precision-ground stock that can be machined to final dimensions before hardening. It is commonly used to produce punches, dies, blanking tools, and small precision parts where tight dimensional control is needed before and after heat treatment. Machinists and toolmakers working in both job-shop and production environments will find this bar ready for immediate layout and machining.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock blank suitable for general toolmaking, die making, and precision fixture fabrication where AISI Type O1 material specification is required.
Machining of O1 tool steel should be performed in the annealed condition using appropriate cutting fluids to extend tool life. Heat treatment and oil quenching should be carried out by a qualified heat treater following recognized industry procedures for AISI O1 tool steel. Always wear appropriate PPE when cutting, grinding, or handling tool steel bar stock. Confirm final dimensions after machining and before heat treatment, as distortion may occur during hardening.
