The STARRETT 54455 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar sized at 9/16 inches thick, 9/16 inches wide, and 36 inches long. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock is produced from tool steel and held to tight dimensional tolerances: plus or minus 0.001 inches on thickness, 0.000 to minus 0.005 inches on width, and plus 0.015 inches on length. Machinists, toolmakers, and die makers use this material as a starting blank for punches, dies, gauges, and other precision tooling components that require oil-hardening heat treatment after machining.
This flat stock is suited for job shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance machining environments where O1 tool steel is the specified grade. It is commonly roughed out on a mill or surface grinder to final dimensions, machined to shape in the annealed condition, then oil-quenched to achieve working hardness. The 36-inch length allows multiple blanks to be cut from a single bar, reducing material handling in low-volume toolmaking applications. Metalworking trades and tool-and-die professionals are the primary users of this product.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock blank compatible with conventional milling, grinding, and EDM operations followed by oil-quench heat treatment processes.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or toolmakers using appropriate coolant and tooling rated for tool steel. Secure the workpiece firmly before any cutting operation. Heat treatment to final hardness must be performed in accordance with AISI O1 heat treatment guidelines and should be carried out by personnel familiar with proper oil-quenching procedures. Wear appropriate PPE when cutting, grinding, or heat treating this material.
