The STARRETT 54453 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar sized at 0.5 inches thick, 10 inches wide, and 36 inches long. O1 is a general-purpose tool steel known for consistent hardening response, good machinability in the annealed state, and excellent edge retention after heat treatment. This flat stock is supplied in annealed condition and is ready for machining, grinding, and subsequent oil-quench hardening. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for precision tooling, jigs, fixtures, dies, and gauges where tight dimensional control is required before hardening. At 51 pounds, this is a full-size bar intended for shop or industrial use by tool and die makers, machinists, and moldmakers.
O1 tool steel flat stock in this size range is used in tool rooms, die shops, and production machine shops. Common applications include blanking dies, forming dies, punches, drill jigs, fixture plates, and gauging components. The 10-inch width and 36-inch length provide ample stock for cutting multiple blanks from a single piece. Secure workholding is required during machining given the part size and weight. Post-hardening grinding to final dimensions is standard practice for critical tolerance surfaces.
