The STARRETT 54433 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Manufactured from AISI Type O1 oil-hardening tool steel, this bar measures 7/16 inch thick, 2-1/2 inches wide, and 36 inches long, with a weight of 11.16 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to +/- 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications that demand close dimensional control. Machinists, tool and die makers, and metalworking shops use this stock to fabricate punches, dies, gauges, fixtures, and cutting tools that will be heat-treated after machining. O1 steel machines cleanly in the annealed state and responds predictably to oil-quench hardening.
This flat stock is intended for professional metalworking environments where a reliable, consistently toleranced tool steel bar is required before heat treatment. Typical applications include fabricating blanks for cutting tools, jigs, mold components, and precision flat tooling. The 36-inch length provides a standard working bar from which multiple parts can be laid out and cut. Cutting, grinding, and machining should be performed while the bar is in the annealed state before any heat treatment. Follow the tool steel supplier's recommended hardening and tempering procedures for AISI O1 material. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment when sawing or grinding tool steel. Heat treatment of O1 steel should be performed by qualified personnel using proper atmosphere-controlled or neutral-salt equipment to avoid decarburization.
