The STARRETT 54429 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 7/16 inch thick, 1 inch wide, and 36 inches long and weighs 4.46 pounds. O1 tool steel is a widely used oil-hardening grade known for its dimensional stability during heat treatment and its ability to hold a sharp cutting edge. Tight tolerances are held throughout: thickness tolerance is plus or minus 0.001 inches, length tolerance is plus 0.015 inches, and width tolerance is 0.000 to minus 0.005 inches. Edge squareness is held to 0.003 inches per inch. This material is supplied in the annealed condition and is ready for machining before hardening.
This flat stock is used in tool and die shops, maintenance facilities, and precision machine shops. Typical applications include blanks for punches, dies, gauges, and cutting tools. It is suited for both short-run tooling and prototype work where O1 oil-hardening steel is the specified grade. Machinists and tool and die makers work with this stock prior to heat treatment to achieve final geometry before the hardening and tempering cycle.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications requiring this grade and size.
Cutting, grinding, and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed with appropriate tooling for hardened or semi-hard steel grades. Heat treatment of O1 tool steel requires oil quenching and must be performed by qualified personnel following established metallurgical procedures. Always wear appropriate PPE when cutting or machining tool steel bar stock. Consult the material data sheet for recommended hardening temperatures and tempering ranges before beginning heat treatment.
