The STARRETT 54426 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who need a reliable, pre-sized blank ready for layout, machining, and heat treatment. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 7/16 inches thick by 7/16 inches wide by 36 inches long and holds a thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches. O1 tool steel offers good machinability in the annealed state and responds well to oil-quench hardening, making it a go-to material for punches, dies, gauges, and cutting tools.
This flat stock is suited for job shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance departments where custom tooling is cut to length and heat treated on site. The square cross-section profile simplifies layout and setup on surface plates or V-blocks. At 36 inches in length, a single bar provides enough material to yield multiple blanks for small tools or fixtures. The annealed condition allows drilling, milling, and grinding before final hardening.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar for use in general tool and die, punch and die, gauge, and fixture fabrication applications where AISI Type O1 material specification is required.
Cutting and machining of O1 tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or toolmakers using appropriate feeds and speeds for annealed tool steel. Secure workpieces firmly in a vise or fixture before cutting to prevent movement and ensure square ends. Heat treatment, including austenitizing and oil quenching, should follow the material supplier guidelines for AISI O1 and be performed by personnel trained in tool steel heat treatment procedures. Allow parts to fully cool and temper before placing in service.
