The STARRETT 54425 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 3/8 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 36 inches long. It ships at 45.9 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, and squareness along all edges is controlled to 0.003 inches per inch. These tight tolerances make this material suitable for applications where dimensional consistency before hardening is critical.
O1 tool steel flat stock is used in job shops, tool rooms, and manufacturing facilities for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, cutting tools, and fixtures. The oil-hardening grade allows for controlled heat treatment with minimal distortion compared to water-hardening grades. This bar is appropriate for both rough stock and near-net blank applications where the stock will be machined, hardened, and finish-ground to final dimensions.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for toolmaking, die work, and precision fixture fabrication where AISI Type O1 material is specified.
Machining, sawing, and grinding of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or tool and die makers using appropriate cutting fluids and tooling rated for hardened or semi-hardened steel. Heat treatment of O1 steel requires controlled furnace equipment and should follow standard metallurgical procedures for oil-quench hardening and tempering. Wear appropriate PPE when cutting, grinding, or handling large steel stock. Edges may be sharp as received.
