The STARRETT 54418 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock blank used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 material specification, this flat stock measures 0.375 inches thick, 4.5 inches wide, and 36 inches long, with a weight of 17.21 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications requiring close dimensional control before heat treatment. It arrives in the annealed, soft condition and is intended to be machined to final shape, then oil-hardened by a qualified heat treater or tool and die shop.
This flat stock is used in job shops, tool rooms, and die-making operations where O1 tool steel is specified for punches, dies, gauges, jigs, and fixtures. O1 is a widely used general-purpose oil-hardening tool steel valued for its machinability in the annealed state and its ability to achieve high hardness after oil quench heat treatment. The 36-inch length provides sufficient material for multiple parts to be cut from a single piece, reducing setup time.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for tool room and die making applications where AISI Type O1 material specification is required.
Machining and cutting should be performed while the material is in the annealed condition using appropriate metalworking equipment. Heat treatment, including oil quench hardening and tempering, should be performed by a qualified heat treater following established metallurgical practice. Follow applicable shop safety standards when cutting, grinding, or handling tool steel stock. Secure workpieces properly before machining to prevent movement.
