The STARRETT 54414 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar, cut to 3/8 inch thick, 2-1/2 inches wide, and 36 inches long. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 material specification, this flat stock is a general-purpose tool steel known for its consistent hardening response in oil-quench heat treatment. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications where dimensional control before hardening is critical. Machinists, tool and die makers, and metalworking fabricators are the primary users of this material.
O1 tool steel flat stock is used in shops producing punches, dies, cutting tools, gauges, and fixtures that require a hardenable steel with predictable oil-quench response. The 36-inch length provides a full bar suitable for multiple blanks. This stock is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining to net shape before heat treatment. It is appropriate for both short-run toolmaking and prototype work in manufacturing environments.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening flat stock for general toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications requiring a hardenable tool steel in flat bar form.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed with appropriate metalworking equipment by qualified machinists or tool and die makers. Work to final dimensions before heat treatment, as hardening will alter machinability. Follow established heat treatment procedures for AISI O1 steel, including proper soak temperature and oil-quench technique, per your shop or a qualified heat treater. Handle hardened stock carefully to avoid edge chipping.
