The STARRETT 54413 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 3/8 inch thick, 2 inches wide, and 36 inches long. Made from AISI Type O1 tool steel, it is supplied in the annealed (soft) condition and ready for machining before hardening. O1 is a general-purpose oil-hardening grade prized for its fine machinability, good wear resistance after heat treatment, and dimensional stability. This stock is held to tight tolerances: thickness and squareness are controlled to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it well suited for precision toolroom applications. It weighs approximately 7.65 pounds per bar. Licensed tool and die makers, machinists, and toolroom technicians are the primary users of this material.
O1 flat stock at these dimensions is commonly used to fabricate punches, dies, gauges, cutting tools, jigs, and fixtures in toolroom and job shop environments. The 36-inch length provides enough stock to lay out multiple parts or cut blanks for small production runs. Its rectangular profile simplifies setup on surface grinders, mills, and lathes. O1 tool steel flat stock is worked by qualified machinists and tool and die makers using conventional milling, grinding, and sawing equipment. Prior to heat treatment, the material should be fully machined to near-final dimensions, leaving only finish-grinding allowance. Oil hardening requires a proper quench medium and temperature-controlled furnace — follow the material supplier heat-treat data sheet and applicable shop safety protocols for handling hot tooling and quench fluids. Always allow the bar to reach room temperature and stress-relieve as needed before finish grinding to final tolerance.
