The STARRETT 54410 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 3/8 inches thick, 1-1/4 inches wide, and 36 inches long. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock is ground to close tolerances, making it well-suited for tool and die work, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and precision machining applications. The O1 grade oil-hardening steel offers good machinability in the annealed state and responds well to heat treatment, allowing toolmakers and machinists to harden and finish to final dimensions. Thickness tolerance is held to +/- 0.001 inches, and edge squareness is maintained at 0.003 inches per inch across all edges.
This flat stock is a standard choice for machine shops, tool rooms, and fabrication operations that require a reliable, dimensionally consistent tool steel blank. It is commonly used in the production of punches, dies, blades, and small custom tooling. Machinists can saw, mill, and grind this stock in the annealed condition before hardening. At 4.78 pounds per bar, this 36-inch length provides enough material for multiple tooling blanks from a single piece.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for tool rooms, machine shops, and precision fabrication operations requiring AISI Type O1 material in 3/8 x 1-1/4 inch cross-section.
Cutting, grinding, and machining should be performed in the annealed state before any heat treatment is applied. Hardening of O1 tool steel involves quenching in oil and should be performed by a qualified heat treater or machinist familiar with tool steel procedures. Use appropriate eye protection, coolant, and cutting tools rated for tool steel when sawing or milling this stock. Handle cut edges with care, as ground surfaces can be sharp.
