The STARRETT 54407 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who require close-tolerance raw material for cutting tools, punches, dies, and fixtures. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 0.375 inches thick, 0.5 inches wide, and 36 inches long. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications where dimensional consistency before heat treat is critical. At 1.91 pounds per piece, the bar is manageable for bench and machine work.
O1 tool steel flat stock is a standard raw material in job shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance departments. It is used to fabricate punches, blades, gauges, and custom tooling. The 36-inch length allows multiple blanks to be cut from a single bar, reducing waste. This grade is oil-quenched during hardening, which produces less distortion than water-hardening grades, making it a practical choice for small cross-section tooling components.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for general toolmaking, die making, and fixture fabrication applications where AISI Type O1 material is specified.
Machining and grinding should be performed before hardening. Oil quenching requires appropriate personal protective equipment and a proper quench tank setup. Heat treatment should be performed by qualified personnel following established metallurgical procedures for O1 tool steel. Always follow applicable shop safety standards when cutting, grinding, or heat-treating tool steel.
