The STARRETT 54405 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 5/16 inch thick, 8 inches wide, and 36 inches long, and weighs 25.5 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications where close dimensional control is required before heat treatment. The O1 grade is a general-purpose oil-hardening tool steel valued for its good machinability in the annealed state and its ability to hold a fine edge after hardening.
This flat stock is used by tool and die makers, machinists, and metalworking shops for blanks, gauges, punches, dies, knives, and custom tooling components. The large 8-inch width and 36-inch length provide substantial material for cutting multiple parts from a single piece. It is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining prior to heat treatment. Applications include both prototype and production tooling in job shops, maintenance departments, and manufacturing facilities.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for general toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications requiring AISI Type O1 material specification.
Cutting, grinding, and machining should be performed by qualified machinists using appropriate tooling for hardened or annealed tool steel. Heat treatment including hardening and tempering should follow established procedures for AISI O1 tool steel and should be performed by qualified personnel. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting or grinding steel stock. Secure the workpiece properly before machining to prevent movement.
