The STARRETT 54403 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 material specification, it measures 5/16 inches thick, 5 inches wide, and 36 inches long, and weighs approximately 15.94 pounds. O1 tool steel is a tungsten-alloyed, oil-quenching grade known for its good dimensional stability during heat treatment and its ability to hold a sharp edge after hardening. This stock is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining before hardening.
This flat stock is suited for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, jigs, fixtures, and similar precision toolroom components. Its close dimensional tolerances make it a reliable choice for applications where stock removal before heat treatment must be minimized. Machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance shops working in industrial, manufacturing, and fabrication environments commonly use this material for both prototype and production tooling.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for toolroom, die shop, and precision machining applications requiring AISI Type O1 material specification.
Machining of O1 tool steel flat stock should be performed in the annealed condition before heat treatment. Oil hardening requires controlled quench procedures and should be performed by qualified personnel following applicable heat-treating standards. Use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting, grinding, or heat-treating tool steel. Allow material to reach ambient temperature before taking final measurements after any thermal operation.
