The STARRETT 54392 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Manufactured from AISI Type O1 tool steel, it measures 5/16 inches thick, 1/2 inches wide, and 36 inches long, with a thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches. O1 tool steel is a widely used oil-hardening grade valued for its good machinability in the annealed state and its ability to hold a sharp edge after heat treatment. This flat stock ships in a soft, annealed condition ready for machining, grinding, and layout work prior to hardening. Machinists, tool and die makers, and precision fabricators are the primary users.
This flat stock is suited for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, blanking tools, and other precision tooling components. Its close dimensional tolerances make it appropriate for applications where near-net stock removal is required before final grinding. The 36-inch length allows multiple blanks to be cut from a single piece, making it practical for shop use in both production and one-off toolmaking environments.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening flat stock suitable for general toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications requiring AISI Type O1 tool steel in flat bar form.
O1 tool steel flat stock is worked by machinists and tool and die makers using conventional milling, grinding, and sawing equipment. Material should be machined in the annealed condition before any hardening cycle. Heat treatment, including oil quenching and tempering, should be performed by qualified personnel following established metallurgical procedures appropriate for O1 tool steel. Secure workpieces properly before machining to prevent movement and maintain dimensional accuracy.
