The STARRETT 54380 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. It is manufactured from AISI Type O1 tool steel, a general-purpose oil-hardening grade known for its dimensional stability during heat treatment and good wear resistance after hardening. This bar measures 0.25 inches thick, 12 inches wide, and 36 inches long, with a weight of 30.6 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications that require tight dimensional control before and after heat treat. Machinists, tool and die makers, and precision fabricators are the primary users of this material.
This flat stock is suited for fabrication of jigs, fixtures, gauges, dies, punches, and other tooling components in job shops, tool rooms, and production environments. The O1 grade machines readily in the annealed condition and responds well to oil quenching for hardening. The large 12-inch width and 36-inch length make this bar appropriate for projects that require cutting multiple blanks or producing large-format tooling plates from a single piece of stock.

This material is supplied in the annealed condition and is intended to be machined before hardening. Cutting, grinding, and milling should be performed by qualified machinists using appropriate tooling for tool steel stock. Heat treatment, including hardening and tempering, should be carried out by a qualified heat treater following established procedures for AISI O1 tool steel. Allow for distortion allowance and finish grinding after heat treatment, as all tool steels move during the hardening process.
