The STARRETT 54378 is an O1 oil-hardening flat stock bar made from AISI Type O1 tool steel. It measures 0.25 inches thick, 8 inches wide, and 36 inches long, with a thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches. O1 tool steel offers excellent machinability in the annealed state and responds predictably to oil-quench hardening, making it a reliable choice for toolmakers, die makers, and machinists who need consistent, repeatable stock. This flat stock is used when fabricating dies, punches, gauges, jigs, and other tooling components that require tight dimensional control before and after heat treatment.
This flat stock is suited for machine shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance shops where custom tooling is produced in-house. The 8-inch width and 36-inch length provide enough material for medium to large tooling blanks without the need for rough profiling from larger plate. The close tolerance on thickness and squareness makes it appropriate for applications where the stock itself serves as a reference surface or a finished dimension before grinding.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening flat stock suitable for use in tool and die fabrication, gauging, and precision tooling applications where AISI Type O1 material specification is required.
Machining and heat treatment of O1 tool steel should be performed by qualified machinists or toolmakers familiar with oil-quench hardening procedures and applicable shop safety standards. Always secure stock properly before cutting or grinding operations. Post-hardening grinding may be required to achieve final dimensional tolerance. Consult the material safety data sheet before handling cutting fluids or quench oils.
