The STARRETT 54376 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 material specification, this flat stock measures 0.25 inches thick, 6 inches wide, and 36 inches long. It holds a thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications where dimensional accuracy is critical before heat treatment. Weighing 15.3 pounds, this is a full-length bar intended for shop stock or direct use in fabricating punches, dies, gauges, jigs, and fixtures. It is handled and installed by machinists, tool and die makers, and metalworking tradespeople.
O1 tool steel is a versatile, oil-quenched steel known for good machinability in the annealed state and the ability to achieve high hardness after heat treatment. This flat stock is suited for low-to-medium production tooling in job shops, maintenance departments, and manufacturing facilities. The 6-inch width and 36-inch length provide substantial material for large dies, stripper plates, or multiple smaller blanks cut from a single bar. Edge squareness is held to 0.003 inches per inch across all edges, supporting accurate layout and machining from the supplied surface.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for use in toolmaking, die making, gauging, and general precision machining applications where oil-quench heat treatment is specified.
Cutting, grinding, and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists using appropriate metalworking equipment. O1 steel is supplied in the annealed condition and must be heat treated by a qualified source to achieve working hardness. Secure the workpiece properly before any machining operation and follow all applicable shop safety procedures. Do not attempt to heat treat without proper furnace equipment and quench media controls.
