The STARRETT 54374 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Cut to 0.25 inches thick, 5 inches wide, and 36 inches long, this flat stock is manufactured from AISI Type O1 oil-hardening tool steel and held to tight dimensional tolerances throughout. Thickness tolerance is plus or minus 0.001 inches, length tolerance is plus 0.015 inches, and width tolerance runs from 0 to minus 0.005 inches. At 12.75 pounds, it is ready for bench work, grinding, or heat treatment in a professional shop environment. Machinists, toolmakers, and die makers are the primary users.
This flat stock is suited for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, jigs, fixtures, and other precision tooling components that require a hardenable steel with good dimensional stability. O1 tool steel responds well to oil-quench hardening, making it a reliable choice when a hardened working surface is required after machining. It is appropriate for low- to medium-production tooling in job shops, maintenance departments, and prototype machining operations.
Designed as a standard O1 tool steel flat bar for general toolmaking and precision machining use where AISI Type O1 oil-hardening stock is specified.
Cutting, grinding, and heat treatment should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolmaker following standard shop safety practices. Always use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting or grinding tool steel. Heat treatment to harden O1 steel requires oil quenching and should follow the material manufacturer's recommended temperature guidelines. Consult applicable shop safety codes before performing any thermal operations.
