The STARRETT 54366 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. Cut from AISI Type O1 material, this flat stock measures 0.25 inches thick, 1.5 inches wide, and 36 inches long, with a weight of 3.83 pounds. O1 tool steel is valued for its machinability in the annealed state and its ability to achieve high hardness after oil quenching. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making this stock suitable for applications that require close dimensional control before and after heat treatment. Machinists, tool and die makers, and metalworking shops stock this material for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, and cutting tools.
This flat stock is suited for low-to-medium production tooling in machine shops, fabrication facilities, and maintenance departments. The 36-inch length provides a practical working blank that can be cut to finished part length on a bandsaw or cold saw. The annealed condition allows conventional milling, turning, drilling, and grinding before hardening. After oil quenching and tempering, O1 achieves high surface hardness suitable for wear-resistant tooling applications. Width tolerance is held from 0.000 to negative 0.005 inches, and length tolerance carries a positive 0.015-inch allowance.

Cutting, grinding, and machining should be performed while the material is in the annealed condition prior to heat treatment. Use appropriate metalworking equipment and personal protective equipment when cutting or grinding tool steel. Heat treatment, including hardening and tempering, should be performed by a qualified heat treater following established metallurgical procedures for AISI O1 tool steel. Deburr all edges after cutting to prevent handling injuries and to achieve accurate layout dimensions.
