The STARRETT 54357 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who require a ready-to-use blank for punches, dies, cutting tools, jigs, and fixtures. Manufactured from AISI Type O1 tool steel, it measures 7/32 inches thick, 1-1/2 inches wide, and 36 inches long, with a weight of 3.35 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, giving the machinist a predictable starting dimension before hardening. O1 is one of the most commonly specified oil-hardening grades in the tool room because of its machinability in the annealed state and its response to a simple oil-quench heat treat cycle.
This flat stock is suited for general tool room and shop floor use in both job shop and production environments. It is supplied in the annealed condition, making it ready for machining, drilling, grinding, or EDM operations prior to hardening. Typical applications include small punches, form tools, gauges, knife blanks, and wear-resistant components. The 36-inch length allows multiple blanks to be cut from a single piece, reducing material waste. Licensed machinists and toolmakers handling this material should be familiar with AISI O1 heat treatment procedures and proper quenching practices.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock for use in tool room, die shop, and maintenance machining applications where AISI Type O1 material specification is required.
Cutting and machining of O1 tool steel flat stock should be performed with appropriate carbide or high-speed steel tooling suited for tool steel grades. Heat treatment including hardening and oil quenching should be carried out by a qualified toolmaker or heat treater following established AISI O1 procedures. Always use proper personal protective equipment when cutting, grinding, or heat-treating tool steel. Refer to the applicable facility safety plan and material safety data for handling annealed tool steel stock.
