The STARRETT 54356 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who need a reliable, dimensionally consistent blank for custom tooling applications. This piece measures 7/32 inch thick, 1-1/4 inches wide, and 36 inches long, with a weight of 2.79 pounds. It is manufactured to AISI Type O1 oil-hardening material specification, a widely used cold-work tool steel valued for its ease of machining in the annealed state and its ability to harden with a controlled oil-quench process. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inch, supporting close-tolerance fabrication work.
This flat stock is used in tool and die shops, maintenance departments, and precision machine shops to produce punches, dies, gauges, cutting tools, and fixtures. The 36-inch length allows the stock to be cut down to multiple blanks from a single piece, reducing scrap and setup time. It is suited for applications where the finished tool will be oil-hardened and tempered to a working hardness after machining.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock blank suitable for machined tooling applications requiring oil-quench heat treatment.
Cutting, grinding, and machining should be performed with tooling appropriate for annealed tool steel before any heat-treat operation. Hardening and tempering of O1 steel requires controlled furnace equipment and a proper oil quench; this work should be performed by qualified personnel following established metallurgical procedures. Handle bar stock with care to avoid nicking edges, as surface damage can affect squareness and tolerance after machining.
