The STARRETT 54354 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, jig construction, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock measures 7/32 inches thick, 3/4 inches wide, and 36 inches long. Thickness tolerance is held to +/- 0.001 inches, making it suitable for close-tolerance work where dimensional consistency matters before and after hardening. At 1.67 pounds per bar, it is sized for bench-scale toolroom use. Machinists, tool and die makers, and metalworking shops work with this material to produce punches, dies, gauges, and custom tooling components that require a hardened, wear-resistant final condition.
O1 tool steel flat stock is a standard toolroom material used in job shops, maintenance departments, and manufacturing facilities. It is ordered in its annealed, soft state, machined to near-final dimensions, then oil-quench hardened and tempered to achieve working hardness. The 36-inch bar length provides a practical single-piece blank for most bench tooling projects. This bar is suited for applications where moderate toughness combined with good wear resistance after hardening is the design requirement.
Designed as a standard AISI Type O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for general toolroom, die, and fixture fabrication applications where this material specification is required.
O1 tool steel flat stock is worked by machinists and tool and die makers using conventional milling, grinding, and sawing equipment. Material should be machined in the annealed condition prior to heat treatment. Oil quench hardening and tempering must be performed by qualified personnel following established metallurgical procedures for AISI O1 tool steel. Allow the workpiece to reach ambient temperature before final grinding to finished dimensions after heat treat.
