The STARRETT 54350 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 3/16 inch thick, 6 inches wide, and 36 inches long. AISI Type O1 is a general-purpose oil-hardening tool steel valued for its dimensional stability during heat treatment and its ability to hold a keen edge after hardening. This flat stock is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining to finished dimensions before hardening. Machinists, toolmakers, and die makers use it to fabricate punches, dies, gauges, bushings, and cutting tools in both production and job-shop environments. The piece weighs approximately 11.47 pounds.
This flat stock is suited to applications where tight dimensional tolerances are required before and after heat treatment. Typical uses include the fabrication of blanking and forming dies, jigs and fixtures, precision gauges, and wear-resistant machine components. The 3/16 inch thickness makes it appropriate for thin-section tooling such as blanking plates, shim stock replacements, and slender blade-form tools. It ships as a single 36-inch length and is commonly worked with standard milling, grinding, and EDM equipment found in tool and die shops.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for use wherever O1 ground flat stock is specified in tooling, die-making, and precision machining applications.
O1 tool steel flat stock is machined, ground, or EDM-processed in the annealed condition prior to hardening and tempering. Always follow established heat-treatment procedures for AISI O1 including proper preheat, austenitizing temperature, and oil-quench sequence — consult the steel manufacturer's data sheet for thermal cycle parameters. Wear appropriate PPE when cutting or grinding tool steel. Inspect finished dimensions after grinding to verify tolerance compliance before committing the blank to heat treatment.
