The STARRETT 54346 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die making, fixture fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 3/16 inch thick, 3 inches wide, and 36 inches long. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications where dimensional consistency directly affects finished part accuracy. At 5.74 pounds, this is a single-piece bar intended for shop use by machinists, toolmakers, and fabricators who require tight-tolerance raw stock for custom tooling projects.
O1 tool steel is a general-purpose oil-hardening grade well suited for punches, dies, gauges, bushings, and similar toolroom components. This flat bar is supplied in the annealed condition, allowing it to be machined, ground, or shaped before hardening. It is used in both jobshop and production toolroom environments where flat stock must be cut to length and finished to close tolerances. Width tolerance runs from minus 0 to minus 0.005 inches, and length tolerance is plus 0.015 inches. Edge squareness is held to 0.003 inches per inch on all edges.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening flat stock bar suitable for toolroom, die-making, and precision fabrication applications requiring this material grade and size.
Cutting, grinding, and machining should be performed before heat treatment. Oil hardening requires controlled quench in an appropriate oil bath; consult a qualified heat-treat specification for cycle parameters. Always use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting or grinding tool steel. Dispose of cutting fluids and grinding swarf in accordance with local regulations.
