The STARRETT 54345 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 3/16 inches thick, 2-1/2 inches wide, and 36 inches long. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, giving machinists and toolmakers a reliable starting point before grinding or finishing to final dimension. At 4.78 pounds per bar, it provides substantial mass for larger blanks while remaining manageable on a surface grinder or mill. O1 tool steel is widely used where good wear resistance, machinability in the annealed state, and predictable oil-quench hardening behavior are required.
This flat stock is suited for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, knives, and other precision tooling components in job shops, tool-and-die operations, and maintenance departments. The 36-inch length provides enough material to cut multiple blanks from a single bar. The 2-1/2-inch width is commonly used for medium-sized die sections and fixture components. Length tolerance is plus 0.015 inches with no minus allowance, width tolerance runs from minus 0 to minus 0.005 inches, and edge squareness is held to 0.003 inches per inch, making the bar ready for layout and machining without requiring significant preliminary cleanup work.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening flat stock bar suitable for general toolmaking, die-making, and precision fabrication applications where O1 grade tool steel is specified.
Cutting, grinding, and heat treatment of tool steel should be performed by qualified machinists or tool-and-die makers familiar with O1 oil-quench hardening procedures. Always anneal the bar if hardness is unknown before machining. Use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting or grinding tool steel. Follow your shop's established heat treat protocols for quench media temperature and soak times when hardening finished blanks.
