The STARRETT 54344 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 3/16 inches thick, 2 inches wide, and 36 inches long. AISI Type O1 is a general-purpose tool steel known for its excellent machinability in the annealed state and good dimensional stability during heat treatment. This flat stock is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining, grinding, or filing to final shape before oil hardening. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and metalworking professionals use this material to fabricate punches, dies, gauges, jigs, and cutting tools. The bar weighs approximately 3.82 pounds.
This flat stock is suited for tool-room and general metalworking applications where a reliable, machinable steel with predictable hardening response is required. Typical uses include fabricating blanking dies, form punches, lathe centers, taps, reamers, and small machine parts that require a hardened working surface. The 36-inch length provides sufficient stock for multiple small tools from a single piece. This material is appropriate for both job-shop and production tool-making environments.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar compatible with conventional machining, grinding, and heat-treating processes used in general tool-room and die-making applications.
Machining and heat treatment should be performed by qualified machinists or tool-and-die makers following standard shop practices for O1 tool steel. Work in the annealed condition for all stock removal operations; harden by heating to the appropriate austenitizing temperature and quenching in oil, then temper immediately. Wear appropriate PPE during machining and heat-treating operations. Follow applicable shop safety and fire codes when handling quench oil and heat-treating equipment.
