The STARRETT 54333 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 5/32 inches thick, 3-1/2 inches wide, and 36 inches long, with a weight of 5.58 pounds. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications that demand close dimensional control before and after hardening. Machined and ground tool steel shops, mold makers, and precision fabricators rely on O1 flat stock for punches, dies, gauges, and similar components that require a clean, machinable pre-hardened blank.
O1 oil-hardening tool steel is a general-purpose grade widely specified in job shops and toolrooms for low-to-medium production tooling. This bar is well suited to applications where the blank will be rough machined, finish ground, then oil quenched and tempered to achieve working hardness. Typical uses include blanking dies, trim dies, form punches, jigs, and precision fixtures. The 36-inch length provides a standard starting blank that can be cut to multiple shorter pieces or used as a single full-length workpiece depending on the job requirement.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening flat stock blank suitable for toolroom and precision machining applications where O1 grade tool steel is specified.
Cutting, grinding, and heat treating of tool steel should be performed by qualified machinists or toolmakers following standard shop safety practices. Always use appropriate coolant when sawing or grinding to prevent overheating the material, which can alter its hardening response. Oil quenching operations require proper ventilation and fire safety controls in accordance with applicable facility and OSHA guidelines. Handle sharp edges and cut ends with appropriate personal protective equipment.
