The STARRETT 54330 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, punches, and precision machined components. Ground to tight dimensional tolerances, it is supplied in AISI Type O1 oil-hardening steel, a widely used cold-work tool steel valued for its machinability, edge retention after hardening, and dimensional stability through the oil-quench hardening process. The bar measures 5/32 inches thick, 2 inches wide, and 36 inches long, with a thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches. It weighs 3.19 pounds per bar. Machinists, toolmakers, and die makers install this stock in job shops, tool rooms, and manufacturing facilities.
This flat stock is suited for fabricating cutting tools, dies, punches, jigs, fixtures, and gauging components where precise pre-hardened stock dimensions reduce setup time. The annealed condition allows conventional milling, drilling, and grinding before heat treatment. After oil-hardening, the material achieves the hardness and wear resistance required for production tooling applications. It is appropriate for both prototype and short-run production work where tight tolerance stock is required off the shelf.
Designed as a standard-format O1 tool steel flat bar for use in tool room and die shop applications requiring AISI Type O1 oil-hardening material in 5/32 x 2 x 36-inch flat stock form.
Cutting, milling, and grinding should be performed by a qualified machinist using appropriate tooling for tool steel stock. Oil-hardening heat treatment must be performed by a qualified heat treater following established procedures for AISI O1 tool steel. Exercise proper machine guarding and personal protective equipment when cutting or grinding. Material should be stored flat and dry to prevent distortion or surface corrosion prior to use.
