The STARRETT 54326 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar sized at 5/32 inch thick, 1 inch wide, and 36 inches long. O1 tool steel is an oil-hardening, cold-work alloy known for its good wear resistance, dimensional stability during heat treat, and ease of machining in the annealed state. This flat stock ships in the annealed condition and is intended for tool and die makers, machinists, and metalworking shops that need a reliable, precision-ground blank for punches, dies, gauges, knives, and other tooling components. Weight is 1.59 pounds per piece. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to tight commercial standards suitable for direct use in tooling applications.
This flat stock is used in job shops, tool rooms, and production environments where a machinable, hardenable blank is required. Typical applications include fabricating punches, arbors, cutting tools, fixture components, and custom hand tools. The annealed condition allows conventional milling, turning, and grinding before the final oil-quench hardening cycle. It is well-suited for low-to-medium production tooling where D2 or A2 alloys would be excessive and carbon steel lacks sufficient hardness potential.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for general toolroom and die shop use wherever AISI Type O1 material specification is required.
Machining and hardening of tool steel flat stock is performed by qualified machinists and tool and die makers. Work the stock in the annealed condition using conventional cutting and grinding equipment before hardening. Follow the material supplier heat-treat guidelines for the O1 alloy preheat, austenitizing temperature, and oil-quench procedure — do not substitute water quench. Wear appropriate PPE when handling and heat-treating tool steel bar stock.
