The STARRETT 54315 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Conforming to AISI Type O1 material specification, this flat bar measures 1/8 inch thick, 10 inches wide, and 36 inches long, with a finished weight of 12.76 pounds. Thickness and squareness tolerances are held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suited for applications where dimensional accuracy is critical before heat treat. Machinists, tool and die makers, and metal fabricators work with this stock to produce punches, dies, gauges, and similar precision tooling components.
O1 tool steel flat stock of this size is used primarily in job shops, tool rooms, and production environments where blanks must be cut, ground, and machined to final form before oil-hardening heat treatment. The 10-inch width and 36-inch length provide substantial material for multiple blanks from a single piece. This grade is widely specified for low-distortion oil-quench applications where moderate wear resistance and good machinability in the annealed state are required.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications requiring AISI Type O1 material specification.
Cutting, grinding, and machining should be performed in the annealed condition prior to heat treatment. Oil-hardening heat treatment should be carried out by a qualified heat treater following AISI O1 procedure guidelines. Use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting or grinding tool steel. Consult applicable shop safety standards when handling stock of this weight and size.
